SHOW NOTES

On today’s show, I welcome Megan Kennedy of Sweet Life Bakeshop in Philadelphia and John Doyle, one half of John & Kira’s, one of the city’s premier chocolatiers. Both guests bring enough sweet treats to make a dentist cry; Megan opens a large bakery box and reveals 5–yes, five, different kinds of banana pudding as well as a sweet biscuit dough-topped peach cobbler and a seasonally appropriate apple crisp piled high with a delightful crumble. John keeps the sugar theme going as he presents several boxes of John & Kira’s signature handcrafted, hand-painted chocolates and talks about how he gets inspiration for his artisanal confections.

Megan talks shop as she explains how Sweet Life Bakeshop was born and how the bakery recently moved from the Point Breeze section of the city to bustling South Street. She shares that she learned to bake at the apron strings of both of her grandmothers and finds inspiration from their classic, down-home recipes. Explaining that Sweet Life is a family affair, she stands by calling her husband (and co-owner) a “frosting snob” but admits that his precision and attention to detail led to the perfecting of their signature frosting. Even the tiny tots, Megan’s three children, are in on the act–spending time in the bakery and learning the family business.

Up next is John Doyle–a veritable Willy Wonka in his own right. John details his start in the culinary industry as a line cook in a swanky Manhattan restaurant where, between cooking a perfect risotto and searing steak, he would sneak bites of Valrhona chocolate from the pastry station. It was those exquisite bites of chocolate that fueled John’s decision to traipse off to Paris (where all good food stories originate) to learn about chocolate. John talks about his love of Parisian chocolate and his desire to replicate that taste upon his return to Philadelphia. Shortly thereafter, he met the woman who would become his wife and John & Kira’s was born. The rest is history…
