10 Commonly Mispronounced Foods

Does hearing someone mangle a food’s name drive you crazy? Ever wanted to slap someone for saying broo-SHET-ah instead of broo-SKET-ah? I found this list of commonly mispronounced foods on the Foodista blog this morning and thought it was worth a reprint. Pay close attention to #5–do you pronounce the cult hot sauce’s name correctly or do you (like me) opt for the popular mispronounciation see-ra-cha? Surprised to see that foie gras didn’t make the list–it’s an oft-butchered name.   REPRINTED FROM THE FOODISTA BLOG Let’s paint a picture....

Things You Should Never Say to a Writer

Since graduating from college, I’ve test-driven quite a number of careers.  Well, I should say “jobs” because none of them ever really felt like something I could do for the rest of my life.  In fact, the word career scared the shit out of me–it implied commitment, a certain kind of stick-to-itiveness that I just wasn’t ready to offer.  It’s not that I’m a flighty airhead–I’m actually far from it.  I’m the girl who took her SATs in the 7th grade, so I’m no dummy; I just couldn’t picture myself following in, say, my...

A Foodie Movie Mash-Up: What to Watch When You Nosh

I have been a cinephile for as long as I can remember; I was fascinated by the movies long before my feet could even reach the floor.  Some children scream their heads off when the house lights are dimmed at a movie theater, but I distinctly remember the thrill of watching darkness envelop the theater as the reels rolled and characters appeared larger than life on the big screen. Nowadays, I see an average of about 5-6 theater movies a month. Hmm, so that’s where my grocery money is going… For just about as long as movie theaters have been in existence, Hollywood and food have...

Lemon Pepper Ruined My Would-Be Marriage

I hate lemon pepper.  It knows good and damn well why I hate it, too. Out of all the spice blends, I detest this offender the most.  I’d like to tell myself it’s because of the artificial, metallic taste it imparts on whatever you sprinkle it on but, if I’m honest, I can trace my disdain all the way back to my college days.  College really tests the mettle of any budding foodie or home cook–you’re forced to scarf down Oliver Twist-like gruel in the cafeteria or get creative with a hot pot, some ramen noodles, and an accompanying packet of MSG-laden...

Breakfast Solitude and Sunday Reflections

I’m a thinking woman and Sundays are my thinking days. Sunday is a day to slow down, be still, and reflect.  Reflect on the week that has passed.  Reflect on the choices you’ve made.  Reflect on life in general. Growing up, Sundays were always a bit quieter–a time, as my mother would say, for “the Lord to do His work.” Being the smart alec observant child I was, I used to retort, “But Mommy, I thought He rested on Sundays.” Even quicker than I, she would say, “Even when He rests, He’s working on our behalves.” So Sunday mornings...
