Taste of the Nation Recap

True food enthusiasts are more than just eaters–they are doers and among the most generous and caring people on the planet. Sunday’s Taste of the Nation event brought foodies, chefs, philanthropists, and all-around do-gooders together in the name of ending childhood hunger. More than 16 million children live in households that struggle to put food on the table–that’s an unbelievable 1 out of  5 children. Hunger directly affects children’s academic performance and prevents them from living up to their full potential. No child in this country should be without food and access to nutrition and Share Our Strength, the organization behind the No Kid Hungry campaign, seeks to end childhood hunger in America through education and raising awareness through various actions and events.

Its signature event, Taste of the Nation, brings together charitable chefs and foodies in an effort to support Share Our Strength’s mission. On Sunday night, Philadelphia’s most talented chefs gathered at the Hotel Monaco as guests noshed on the chefs’ most popular dishes and sipped hand-crafted libations from the area’s hottest mixologists. Top toques Michael Solomonov (Zahav, Federal Donuts, and Percy Street Barbecue), Kevin Sbraga (of eponymous Sbraga), and David Katz (of the now-shuttered and sorely missed Mémé who served as the event’s Chef Chair) were among the chefs who brought their A-game while guests ate, mingled, and bid on a host of silent auction items. There was even a guest appearance by longtime Share Our Strength supporter Marc Summers (of Double Dare and Food Network fame).

Share Our Strength’s Taste of the Nation is Philadelphia’s largest No Kid Hungry event and raises funds for Philabundance, The Food Trust, The Greater Philadelphia Coalition Against Hunger and The Pennsylvania Hunger Action Center. Though Taste of the Nation has ended, childhood hunger has not. There are several ways to get involved by volunteering or donating; visit the organizations’ individual websites for more information.
