Mention the word cruise and almost immediately images of far-flung places and exotic locales are conjured, but did you know that a cruise to more “tame” destinations can be just as rewarding? Holland America Line, the Seattle-based cruise line owned by Carnival, offers a relaxed itinerary to Canada and New England aboard its mid-sized ms Veendam. Various Canadian ports are visited along with a brief stint in Bar Harbor, Maine (too brief in my opinion–I love the area and could have stayed an extra day or two). Our itinerary was as follows:

  •       Day 1 Quebec City (overnight in city)
  •       Day 2 Quebec City
  •       Day 3 Cruising Gulf of St. Lawrence
  •       Day 4 Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island
  •       Day 5 Sydney, Nova Scotia
  •       Day 6 Halifax, Nova Scotia
  •       Day 7 Bar Harbor, Maine
  •       Day 8 Boston, Massachusetts (debark in morning)

Shore excursions and myriad tour options give passengers a chance to set out and explore the towns but your best bet is hiring a private car or taxi and scoring a local drive who’s familiar with the area and can give you a bit more background than your standard tour operator.
