Bourdain vs. The Butter Queen

by

America’s favorite razor-tongued junkie-turned-chef strikes again.  It’s no secret that Anthony Bourdain loathes anything (and anyone) remotely related to Food Network, so when he set his sights on TV celebrity chefs (yet again), no one was surprised.  In fact, this kind of solicited rant and rave has become his schtick.  Journalists get a kick out of his scathing sound bites and acid-laden diatribes and try their damnedest to elicit enough vitriol to satisfy readers’ need for mean, but is it getting old?

Bourdain’s status as rock star chef, travel junkie, and all-around badass made him an alt-culture icon and the envy of wannabe chefs and travel writers, but in recent years he kind of comes off as your senile grandpa who can’t shut his damn mouth at the Thanksgiving dinner table.  This week, the NY Post reported that Bourdain trashed butter-loving Paula Deen in an interview in this month’s TV Guide, calling her “the worst, most dangerous person in America” for her often times unhealthy cooking.  He went on to say that she “revels in unholy connections with evil corporations, and she’s proud of the  fact that her food is fucking bad for you”.  Then he questioned if she even cooks anymore.
.Pot meet kettle. While an argument can certainly be made about the unhealthiness of Deen’s food, can someone who hasn’t turned on a stove burner in years pass judgment on the cooking skills of others?

Unusual Museums Around the World

I’ve always been drawn to obscure things; I’ve never been attracted to the normal or what the cool kids were doing. In particular, I enjoy the unusual and the macabre—blame it on an enduring love of the works of Edgar Allan Poe—and I always seem to seek out bizarre and…

10 Things to Do in Havana, Cuba

For most Americans born after the 1958 embargo, Cuba has remained an island of mystery even though it’s only 105 miles off the shore of Key West, Florida. We know very little of Cuba–perhaps only the 3 c’s–Communism, cars, and cigars, but the destination is so much more than that. The island is…
