Nomad Pizza Wanders Into Philly

by

There’s good news for Philly pizza lovers–you no longer have to trek to Hopewell, NJ or rent their super-tricked out REO Speedwagon to snag a pie from Nomad Pizza.  Owners Tom Grim and Stalin Boden have opened an additional physical location in the city, taking over the former Horizons.  The bi-level pizzeria features a cozy downstairs with a couple of communal tables where you can catch a glimpse of all the pie-making magic and a full bar and larger eating area upstairs (complete with a movie projector and screen).  While heading upstairs to await your pie order and have a nice glass of vino is a great idea, peeling your eyes away from the mammoth, custom-built wood oven downstairs might prove to be more difficult than you think.  An exact replica of the oven found in the mobile Nomad Pizza wagon, it’s hard not to be mesmerized by the copper-domed beauty whose maximum temperature reaches a fiery 850° which perfectly blisters the Neapolitan style pizzas from raw to cooked in an unbelievable 90 seconds.

Nomad is committed to sourcing and using all-organic products whenever possible and the result is a delicious, succinct menu of about 12 pizzas and a handful of artfully done salads using ingredients from several local farms.  The owners hint that small plates and apps may be offered in the near future along with a seasonal pie addition, so be on the lookout for a new pizza or two in the coming warmer months.

Menu highlights include:

  • Tartufo – Imported mozzarella di bufala, Cherry Grove Farm toma cheese, shiitake mushrooms, organic garlic, Double Brook Farm fresh egg, sea salt and black pepper, topped with Boschetto al Tartufo Bianchetto and black truffle oil
  • Spicy Sausage – Italian tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, basil, Renaissance Sausage, caramelized onions, organic olive oil and parmesan and sea salt
  • Margherita – Italian tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, basil, organic olive oil, organic parmesan and sea salt

Pizzas range from $11 – $19 and salads range from $7 – $10.  Follow Nomad Pizza on Twitter @NomadPizza or find them on Facebook.
